Stolen Bike, Not Valor
Koa was riding his new electric bike through the city park not too far from the US Embassy where he served in an Asian country. The ride was a part of his daily evening workout. He didn't really like the idea of an electric bike because he thought it was lazy. Besides, Koa had another good mountain bike he'd bought here used and it gave him a much better workout. But this one was his girlfriend's gift for his 29th birthday that she had taken the trouble to ship to him across the ocean. Koa felt obliged to ride it out at least occasionally, but promised himself not to use the battery. He even took it off the bike, to avoid the temptation.

Steeling Against and Forging Ahead
For this writer, the time since writing last year’s The Important Things has been rough, for a multitude of reasons that won’t be delved into here. A large part of that was spent staring at the floor, evaluating next steps, and, many days, coming to weak, if any, conclusions.

This article explores the emotional, social, and personal impact of the military draft, not just as a policy, but as a deeply human experience.

The Waitress
How One Woman's Extraordinary Memory Transformed an Entire Community THE WOMAN WHO NEVER FORGOT A FACE ☕ Maria Santos had worked at the same diner in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for thirty-one years, and during those three decades she served approximately two hundred thousand meals to an estimated forty thousand individual customers, and the thing that made her legendary in the community was not the quality of the food which was standard diner fare or the speed of her service which was efficient but unremarkable but rather her apparently supernatural ability to remember every customer she had ever served including their name, their usual order, their family details, and the specific conversations they had shared during previous visits even when those visits occurred years apart, and this extraordinary memory which neuroscientists would later identify as a rare condition called Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory or HSAM transformed a ordinary waitress job into something approaching community ministry because Maria's customers did not just come for the food but for the experience of being remembered 🧠✨
