Live Your Life

Have you ever thought about our existence here?

Ever thought about the cycles that come

round,

again and again, throughout our lives?

*

Night into day, and back again,

hours transforming into weeks,

then months,

then years – the time constructs that help us

*

make sense of it all.

*

It’s easy to get lost in it.

Easy to feel ourselves pulled into

an automated existence,

automatons running on unremembered scripts.

*

Patterns becoming habits becoming

grooves becoming ruts:

the same drive home,

the same things to eat,

*

invisible armor we thought would keep us safe.

*

That’s an existence.

Is it a life?

Every morning the sun rises

in a glory of ecstatic colors we’ve never seen before.

*

Every evening the noisy grackles

careen and whirl as that same sun

creates new watercolors dripping down into the west,

reflected on the luminescent black figures,

*

shrieking sentinels blaring a new conquest.

*

And in those moments between

sunrise and sundown,

we all have moments, whispers of opportunity

to do things differently.

*

To see the beauty of this world.

To feel the vitality, the life moving

around us and through us, those

moments between breaths,

*

Muses whispering in our ears, beckoning:

*

Live your lives.

Examine your patterns.

Choose differently.

See what’s really going on around you.”

*

Because with all the markers

we create to note the passing of time,

the only thing that truly matters

is this One Present Moment.

*

And we never know which will be our last.
