How I Became Black: An African Immigrant Experience with Racial Identity
When I first migrated to America, I never considered myself black since I migrated from a nation where the idea of skin color was never reflective of my identity. In Nigeria, ethnicity, religion, social class, and gender define who you are in society. To be called black has never been part of the conversation since our social construct was not based on race. I can travel to any part of the country without worrying that someone is going to judge me or not afford me the imperative opportunity based on my skin color. When I migrated to America, I realized that my race and my ethnicity as an African immigrant would define the space that society afforded me. As an immigrant, I found myself in a country with unfamiliar rules and racial nuance that was foreign to me. As a black immigrant, nobody will pull you aside to instruct or educate you on racial hierarchy and how it is interwoven in all aspects of American life. Achieving the "American Dream" is the focus of many immigrants, but they often don't understand the hidden rules. African immigrants regularly face many challenges as they adapt to their new home.

In the summer of 2019, five friends from a nearby city decided to take a weekend break from their busy lives and go camping in a remote forest area known locally as Pine Ridge, a place famous for its beautiful landscapes and hiking trails but also whispered about in strange local stories that many people dismissed as exaggerated campfire tales. The group had known each other since college and had taken several trips together before, so they were confident that a simple camping adventure would be the perfect way to relax and reconnect with nature after months of stressful work schedules and daily responsibilities.

The House I Could Never Find
I am standing in front of a house. It is small, with old yellow walls and a weathered roof, the kind that has survived enough seasons to earn its softness. Time has left its mark everywhere - in the cracks, in the faded paint, in the quiet wear of its exterior - but none of it takes away from its beauty. If anything, it makes the house more lovable. Some things become more precious, precisely because time has touched them.

COMPENDIUM “And what if I make the wrong choice?” “The greatest bit of hubris a man can hold is denying there are choices without consequence. The right choice now may prove to be the wrong one ten years hence. The wrong choice now may yield but a scratch but prevent the tumbling of an unseen pebble that sparks an avalanche. The only way to truly fail is to never choose at all.”
