Strangers
"I think we were supposed to turn back there." Samira fussed, tapping her phone screen again. As if the reception was a goldfish that could be startled back into activity. "Nah, we're supposed to take a left at Old Jackson Mill road, remember? I saw it on the list of directions before we lost signal." Josh did his best to reassure her. Something about being on vacation never failed to rob his wife of her ability to relax. "I'm just worried we won't get to check in on time. What if they tell us we can't stay there anymore because we're late?"

Never See It Coming
Every year our family reunions are normally at fun places. Fun PUBLIC places where we can leave whenever we want. Whenever we need to. But this year, my aunt decided that we were too safe. Okay, so Aunt Daisy didn’t say that. It was just what I got from this whole damned situation. We also had to keep our phones at home. Or in the car. Mom and dad kept their phones at home. While I used my phone on the hour long drive up the mountain to this place. As if I wasn’t going to have any damn fun being in a car for an hour with nothing to do. I did leave it in the car like my aunt wanted. But all of this was just utter bullshit.

The Beast of Bodmin Moor
There are places where the land itself seems to resist explanation, where the wind moves differently, where the silence feels less like absence and more like presence. Bodmin Moor, a vast and brooding stretch of wilderness in Cornwall, England, is one of those places. It is a landscape of rolling fog, ancient stone, and sudden isolation, where visibility can vanish in minutes and distance becomes difficult to judge. It is also a place where, for decades, something has been seen moving through the mist, something large, silent, and entirely out of place.

The Badger's Debt: The Tzompantli of Tenochtitlan
The Mexican sun was a physical weight, a humid press against the skin that smelled of crushed marigolds and ancient dust. For the "Madison Five," Class of ’08, the annual trip was sacred—a chance to shed their tailored lives and return to the rowdy ghosts of State Street.

Prequel: The Badger's Choice
It was 2009, and the world was screaming. The financial crisis had turned the "Golden Boys" of Madison into scavengers. While Steve, Todd, and Michael were clinging to their entry-level analyst roles with white-knuckled desperation, Jerry was failing. His first iteration of "Get Hip"—then a genuine, wide-eyed attempt at sustainable non-profit consulting—was hemorrhaging what little capital he had.
