Say It Plainly Challenge Winners
A pattern showed up pretty quickly reading this shortlist: these poems don’t circle what they’re about. They just say it.
That makes for some tough, raw reads. Miscarriage, infidelity, chronic pain, money, addiction, fear for someone you love. Not much is softened or dressed up. By the end, I felt like I needed a cigarette, and I don’t even smoke.

Midas touch comes with the dawn. Such a beautiful poem!
I just wish that I had that river by my door to wade into every morning. What a refreshing feeling that would be, I can barely wake up in the mornings, but that would certainly get me up. Hoot and hoot.
My father-in-law would have celebrated this beyond measure. One of his favorite aphorisms was, "It's hard to soar with the eagles in the morning if you hoot all night with the owls." I like it, too, though I'm finding it harder & harder to get up all the time.
Yes yes yes 🙌 😁👑
